World Blood Donor Day 2018: Be There For Someone Else. Give Blood. Share Life.


The 14th of June every year is used to celebrate blood donation and to appreciate donors who have saved lives by donating blood without charging any fee. It was established in 2004.

This event is also carried out to raise awareness of the importance of regular blood donation to save lives; this helps in making safe blood available always to use in times of medical emergencies.

Blood transfusion and blood products save millions of lives each year; without this, the rate of deaths worldwide would be doubled, it helps prolong the lifespan of patients with life-threatening diseases and improve the quality of their lives.

It helps surgeons and medical doctors carry out complex surgical procedures because there can replace lost blood with donated ones. It also helped in reducing maternal death rate caused by labor complications or loss of blood, the donated blood is quickly transfused to the woman.

Accident victims also benefit from generous blood donors; there is a standby blood to replace that lost on the accident scene and their lives are spared. Donated blood has helped humanity a lot and that is why this day is used to appreciate these generous donors and to call for more donors.

The theme for this year is “blood donation as an act of solidarity”; it brings out the fundamental human values of kindness, empathy, altruism, and respect. The slogan for blood donation is “be there for someone else, Give blood, share life”.

Stories of people whose lives have been saved via donated blood will also be told during this event; this will help motivate people to donate blood regularly to ensure an adequate supply of blood.

Through the regular and unpaid donation of blood; everyone can participate in the health system and achieve national self-sufficiency of blood. It also helps to promote community values of regular blood donation in caring for one another
